How WhatsApp verifies a number

WhatsApp sends a 6-digit registration code by SMS or by voice call. When you register a number for the first time, those are the only two options. SMS Duo numbers receive SMS only, so always choose "SMS", not "Call me".

Why shared numbers fail

Most public numbers are already registered, or WhatsApp has banned them. You may see "This phone number is banned" or "not a valid number".
WhatsApp applies extra checks to VoIP and heavily reused numbers.
Registering a number logs out the previous user of that number. The next person can do the same to you, and read your code in the public inbox.

Protect the account if you proceed

Right after you verify, open WhatsApp → Settings → Account → Two-step verification, set a 6-digit PIN and add an email address. Without the PIN, whoever controls the number later can re-register your account.
