You can try, but free public numbers usually fail for Telegram. Most shared numbers are already registered or banned, and anyone who can read the number's SMS could later take over the account. For an account you want to keep, use a private number.

How Telegram sends the login code

When you enter a phone number, Telegram first checks whether that number already has an account. If it does, the login code is usually sent inside the Telegram app of whoever is logged in to that account, not by SMS. With a public number, that is almost always someone else, so the code never reaches the public inbox.

If the number is new to Telegram, the code is sent by SMS. But Telegram is strict about numbers that many people have used: you may see "This phone number is banned" or "Too many attempts, please try again later". Public numbers are exactly that kind of number.

The takeover risk

Telegram accounts are tied to the phone number. Whoever can receive a login code for that number can log in. With a public number, the next person who types the same number into Telegram can request a code and read it in the same public inbox.

If you do use a temporary number, turn on a password right away: Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification, and add a recovery email you control.
